Like HOT FUSS, DAY & AGE focuses on hooks and an energetic, highly polished sound. Yet it still manages to incorporate the experimental ambitions of its predecessor, this time out with a penchant for genre-hopping pastiche. Brazilian, blue-eyed soul, disco, and Afro-beat can be heard, all threaded into the Killers' trademark dance-rock.But even while expanding their arrangements with saxophones (on the attention-grabbing opener, "Losing Touch") and steel drums (the tropical and immensely catchy "I Can't Stay), the Killers haven't lost their love of 1980s synth-pop. The anthemic "Human" is a case in point, proving that the New Wave influences that gave the band its initial appeal are still intact. Buffered by gleaming, pristine production, DAY & AGE soars and seduces; it's irrefutable proof that even as the Las Vegas quartet mixes up their sound, the appeal of their button-pushing pop endures.

Genre: Electronic

RSD Release Date: DDD

Released: 12/15/2017

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-The-Killers-Day-Age-180G-Vinyl_75Evg.jpg?v=1742097640
lady-gaga-chromatica-milky-clear-vinyl-vinyl
Lady Gaga Chromatica (Milky Clear Vinyl) Vinyl
Chromatica is the 6th studio album by Lady Gaga. Three albums down the line, they prove to be more than a flash in the pan on SAWDUST. Pygmalion Vinyl
Pygmalion is the most abstract of Slowdive's albums; after moving from the sugary pop of Just for a Day to the more mature and more experimental Souvlaki, the band began to incorporate even more elements of ambient electronica -- drum loops, samples, and songs even less tangible than on previous releases. There seem to be two prevailing opinions of the album, among Slowdive fans: either (a) it's disappointingly "out there," since it doesn't work with the conventional pop underlying the sounds of Souvlaki, or (b) it's absolutely brilliant, taking their sound into the realms it was always destined to go. The second opinion seems a little more reasonable; tracks like "Blue Skied an' Clear" and "Crazy for You" demonstrate that the songs are still in there, somewhere -- they're just buried under more abstract sounds than before. The album is not for those seeking a direct and solid song under the surface -- but for anyone who appreciates the indirect and intangible, it's a stylistic masterpiece. ~ Nitsuh Abebe

Genre: Electronic

Released: 12/18/12

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Slowdive-Pygmalion-Vinyl_rJ0XY.jpg?v=1742065937
portishead-dummy-20th-anniversary-reissue-lp-vinyl
PORTISHEAD Dummy (20th Anniversary Reissue) LP Vinyl

Brand New Sealed | PORTISHEAD | Dummy (20Th Anniversary Reissue) LP | Vinyl | Release Date: 07/01/2019

Genre: Electronic

Released: 7/01/2019

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-PORTISHEAD-Dummy-20Th-Anniversary-Reissue-LP-Vinyl_5MenX.jpg?v=1741189155
kaytranada-nothin-like-u-chances-150g-vinyl-includes-downl
Kaytranada NOTHIN LIKE U / CHANCES (150g Vinyl/ Includes Download Insert) Vinyl

Brand New Sealed | Kaytranada | Nothin Like U / Chances (150G Vinyl/ Includes Download Insert) | Vinyl | Release Date: 02/22/2019

Genre: Electronic

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 2/22/2019

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Kaytranada-Nothin-Like-U-Chances-150G-Vinyl-Includes-Downl_OIP89.jpg?v=1742133797
bon-iver-22-a-million-vinyl
Bon Iver 22 A MILLION Vinyl
After a few years spent working on things other than Bon Iver, time spent sorting out heavy personal issues, and a radical rethink of the style that launched Justin Vernon's project to the upper reaches of indie folk popularity, the always searching musician returned in 2016 with an album that redefined Bon Iver in dramatic fashion. 22, A Million is a complicated and intricate record that features chopped-up lyrics, altered vocals, sped-up samples, alternately shimmering and clipped keyboards, treated saxophones, and the occasional gently strummed guitar. Through most of the challenging album, Vernon and his collaborators create miniature structures of sound and space, letting his vocals drift and cascade through sparse and fractured constructs like a lost soul wandering through empty futuristic streets. It's a long way from intimate folk songs recorded in a remote Wisconsin cabin. In the music, one can hear the influence of Vernon's occasional collaborator Kanye West, especially on the mutated R&B tracks like "10 d E A T h b R E a s T ? ?" and "33 'God'," where his vocals take on a rap-like cadence, but also in the sense of grandeur and bombast intermittently found there and elsewhere. In direct contrast are the songs that sound very inward and emotionally bleak and twisted, possibly reflecting some of Vernon's struggles along the way. The desperate "715 - CR??KS," which features nothing but a choir of Auto-Tuned Vernons singing aching lyrics that sound like they're being ripped from the deepest, darkest corner of his tortured soul, is maybe the darkest track. In yet more contrast, a few songs on the album retain much of the hushed acoustic feel of his earlier albums, but with weird electronics and tricks around the edges. The beautiful "29 #Strafford APTS" is a folk song at its core, but he adds altered vocals, queasily pitched saxophones, and distorted electronic tones to provide some drama to the song. He does similar things to the album-ending piano ballad "00000 Million" and the tense, almost ambient "21 M??N WATER," turning them from typically sad Bon Iver songs into something weird and oddly more affecting. The only track on the album that falls short of the standard set elsewhere is "8 (circle)," which makes the mistake of being a little too earnestly straightforward and too much like a Bruce Hornsby song. This was probably the one that needed the most manipulation, and it's the one that gets the least. One little misstep can't keep 22, A Million from being a return to form, even as it turns the established form on its head and gives it a spin. It's clear that the upheavals in Vernon's life and music are a matched set; he turns his pain into art as he does a deep dive into exploration of technique and sound. It's an impressive feat of reinvention that manages to keep Vernon's emotional core fully intact no matter how far the music strays from established Bon Iver territory. ~ Tim Sendra

RSD Date: n/a

Released: 09/30/2016

Genre: Electronic

Best Sellers: Top Seller

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Bon-Iver-22-A-Million-Vinyl_qTpMw.jpg?v=1741792835
st-vincent-st-vincent-vinyl
St. Vincent ST. It's not hard to hear the influence that album had on these songs: Love This Giant's literal and figurative brassiness gave Clark's witty yet thoughtful approach more sass without sacrificing any of her intelligence. Similarly, while St. Vincent is some of her most pop-oriented work, it doesn't dilute the essence of her music. If anything, her razor-sharp wit is even more potent when polished in a candy coating with just a hint of venom. This is especially true of the album's singles: on "Digital Witness," one of the songs with the closest kinship to her "Love This Giant" work, she juxtaposes pointed commentary ("If you can't see me/What's the point of doing anything?") with Valley Girl "yeah"s in a trenchant expression of the 21st century's constant oversharing and need for validation. This somewhat frantic undercurrent bubbles to the surface on "Birth in Reverse," one of Clark's most immediately winning singles since "Actor Out of Work," and one that makes retreat seem nearly as exciting as revolution. Here and throughout the album, Clark and longtime producer John Congleton use their signature, proudly artificial sound to highlight her direct storytelling, whether it's the way "I Prefer Your Love"'s trip-hoppy sheen lets the declaration "I prefer your love to Jesus" ring out more boldly or the way Clark sings "I'm afraid of you because I can't be left behind" gives the lie to her brash guitar playing on "Regret." As on Strange Mercy, Clark explores strength and vulnerability in ever more masterful, and approachable, ways. Not every song may be as literally autobiographical as "Rattlesnake," which was inspired by a secluded walk in the desert in the altogether. Yet there's more than a kernel of emotional truth to "Prince Johnny," where Clark's character ends up even more exposed thanks to some songwriting sleight-of-hand. The hallucinatory, funky "Huey Newton" and the decaying power ballad "Severed Crossed Fingers" show off not just Clark's musical range, but just how eloquently she blends passion and precision. And, as her most satisfying, artful, and accessible album yet, St. Vincent earns its title. ~ Heather Phares

RSD Date: n/a

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

Released: 2/25/2014

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-St-Vincent-St-Vincent-Vinyl_B5ZgC.jpg?v=1741625194
david-bowie-low-2017-remastered-version-vinyl
David Bowie LOW (2017 REMASTERED VERSION) Vinyl
Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, cello, harmonica, saxophone, piano, synthesizer, vibraphone, xylophone, pump bass, percussion, tapes, sound effects); Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, piano, Chamberlain, synthesizer); Carlos Alomar, Ricky Gardener (guitar); Eduard Meyer (cello); Roy Young (piano, Farfisa organ); Peter, Paul (piano, Arp synthesizer); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (percussion); Iggy Pop, Mary Visconti (background vocals).
Recorded at Chateau d'Herouville, France and Hansa By The Wall, Berlin, Germany.
The first (Heroes and Lodger would follow) of Bowie's three Berlin albums. Not only did he fully integrated the crashing metal guitars of Broken, but several newfound elements -- expanded song structures, odd time signatures, shifting arrangements filled with novel sounds, tremendous textural variety -- can be traced to the influence of progressive rock. So can the painstaking attention devoted to pacing and contrast -- The Downward Spiral is full of striking sonic juxtapositions and sudden about-faces in tone, which make for a fascinating listen. More important than craft in turning Reznor into a full-fledged rock star, however, was his brooding persona. Grunge had the mainstream salivating over melodramatic angst, which had always been Reznor's stock in trade. The left-field hit "Closer" made him a postmodern shaman for the '90s, obsessed with exposing the dark side he saw behind even the most innocuous fa?ades. In fact, his theatrics on The Downward Spiral -- all the preening self-absorption and serpentine sexuality -- seemed directly descended from Jim Morrison. Yet Reznor's nihilism often seemed like a reaction against some repressively extreme standard of purity, so the depravity he wallowed in didn't necessarily seem that depraved. That's part of the reason why, in spite of its many virtues, The Downward Spiral falls just short of being the masterpiece it wants to be. For one thing, fascination with texture occasionally dissolves the hooky songwriting that fueled Pretty Hate Machine. But more than that, Reznor's unflinching bleakness was beginning to seem like a carefully calibrated posture; his increasing musical sophistication points up the lyrical holding pattern. Having said that, the album ends on an affecting emotional peak -- "Hurt" mingles drama and introspection in a way Reznor had never quite managed before. It's evidence of depth behind the charisma that deservedly made him a star. [In 2017, The Downward Spiral was reissued in a remastered two-LP Definitive Edition pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Produced by Mike Crossey, I Like It When You Sleep finds the 1975 picking up on many of the stylistic threads running through their Crossey-helmed, self-titled 2013 debut: synthy new wave, kinetic dance-rock, and atmospheric balladry. The difference this time around is Crossey, and the band's pristine studio execution, marked by a distinctive '80s adult contemporary aesthetic. While bands like MGMT and Vampire Weekend have long mined the VH-1 vaults for stylistic inspiration, there's nothing mannered about the 1975's retro-leanings. Despite their name and their ear for '80s synthesizers, the British outfit sound much more flamboyant than their contemporaries. This is primarily due to the contributions of lead singer Matthew Healy, whose overly wordy lyrics and weird, playfully dark persona -- sort of like a sexual Fraggle -- can sometimes put listeners off the pop scent. As he sings on "The Sound," "It's not about reciprocation, it's just all about me/A sycophantic, prophetic, Socratic, junkie wannabe."
In that sense, the 1975 are more in line with the swagger of artists like INXS, U2, or even Madonna for that matter, whose early hits clearly had an impact on the group's approach here. Cuts like "UGH!," and the cheeky, plastic funk single "Love Me," sound delightfully like something Madonna might have made in collaboration with Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers and art-pop duo Yello. Similarly, "The Sound" and the sparkling anthem "She's American," feature brightly infectious hooks that wouldn't be out of place on a Prince album. In fact, there's a palpable R&B inclination running through much of I Like It When You Sleep. It's a vibe that reaches an apex on the yearning, mid-album slow-jam, "If I Believe You," which also happens to feature a gorgeously rendered fl?gelhorn solo from jazz star and longtime D'Angelo collaborator Roy Hargrove.
Elsewhere, in keeping with the overall '80s adult contemporary sound, tracks like the shimmeringly moody "Somebody Else" and the sweetly romantic "Paris," bring to mind Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac. Admittedly, at 17 tracks, I Like It When You Sleep is long. And given the poetic, atmospheric nature of many of the songs, it's somewhat unwieldy in one sitting. Ultimately, however, it's that uncompromising mix of POP (in capitalize letters) and inventive, exploratory musicianship that help make it such a rewarding listen. As the title implies, it may take the 1975 a while to get to the point on I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, but when they do, the results are revelatory. ~ Matt Collar

RSD Date: n/a

Genre: Electronic

Released: 2/26/2016

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-1975-I-Like-ItClrEx-Vinyl_eXXy3.jpg?v=1741189143
michael-kiwanuka-kiwanuka-2-lp-vinyl
Michael Kiwanuka KIWANUKA [2 LP] Vinyl

Brand New Sealed | Michael Kiwanuka | Kiwanuka [2 LP] | Vinyl | Release Date: 11/01/2019

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/01/2019

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Michael-Kiwanuka-Kiwanuka-2-LP-Vinyl_j2eXZ.jpg?v=1742064544
animal-collective-strawberry-jam-vinyl
Animal Collective STRAWBERRY JAM Vinyl
With six albums and two certifiable classics (HERE COMES THE INDIAN and SUNG TONGS), Animal Collective easily took the crown for the best and most creative band to emerge from the fertile Brooklyn underground of the early 2000s. A 14-year-old fan intuited that Weezer would be amenable to covering Toto's 1982 chart-topper "Africa," so she started a Twitter campaign in December 2017 to petition the band to do just that. After six months of cajoling, Weezer relented -- by releasing a version of "Rosanna," the hit Toto had before "Africa." The next week, the band unveiled their cover of "Africa," which swiftly became Weezer's biggest hit since 2005, matching that year's "Perfect Situation" placement at 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Somehow, that wasn't the end of the shenanigans. As the single stayed on the charts, Toto returned the favor by covering Weezer's "Hash Pipe," then Weezer parodied themselves for the long-delayed video for their "Africa," bringing Weird Al Yankovic along for good measure.
Just when the "Africa" cycle seemed to finally end, Weezer sprung The Teal Album upon the world. Inspired by the success of "Africa," Weezer cut an entire album of oldies, generally sticking to the '80s, but finding space for the Turtles' "Happy Together" and Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" -- two '60s chestnuts that were omnipresent during the Reagan era. The exception to this rule is conspicuous: a version of TLC's 1999 smash "No Scrubs." By covering a beloved modern R&B hit, Weezer is opening themselves up to scorn and ridicule -- the deliberately gangly band is certainly not smooth enough to replicate TLC's groove -- but that's kind of the point of The Teal Album: it's designed to generate online chatter for its existence, not for what it is. Taken on a strictly musical terms, The Teal Album is pretty anodyne stuff. Weezer replicates the arrangements of beloved songs, adds a bit more fuzz on the guitar solos, and flattens the vocal affectations, which amounts to one weird trick: Weezer doesn't attempt to make the songs their own, yet these versions unmistakably sound like Weezer. Chalk it up to the curious obsessions of Rivers Cuomo, a songwriter who used to carry around a notebook so he could dissect why one pop song worked and another didn't. The meticulous replications of The Teal Album aren't a million miles away from that notebook, but by having Weezer pop into familiar settings, Cuomo has created a hyper-saturated, uncanny valley, where nothing seems quite real. To a certain extent, the reaction to The Fame may have been a little too enthusiastic, with GaGa turning inescapable sometime in the summer of 2009, when she appeared on countless magazine covers while both Weezer and DAUGHTRY covered "Pokerface," the rush to attention suggesting that she was the second coming of Madonna, a comparison GaGa cheerfully courts and one that's accurate if perhaps overextended. Like the marvelous Madge, Lady GaGa ushers the underground into the mainstream -- chiefly, a dose of diluted Peaches delivered via a burbling cauldron of electro-disco -- by taming it just enough so it's given the form of pop yet remains titillating. Sure, GaGa sings of disco sticks, bluffin' with her muffin, and rough sex, but her provocation doesn't derive solely from her words: this is music that sounds thickly sexy with its stainless steel synths and dark disco rhythms. Where GaGa excels, and why she crossed over, is how she doesn't leave all this as a collection of hooks and rhythms, she shapes them into full-blown pop songs, taking the time to let the album breathe with chillout ballads and percolating new wave, like the title track that echoes Gwen Stefani in dance diva mode. But where Gwen simply celebrates celeb consumer culture, GaGa bites, her litany of runway models, pornographic girls, and body plastic delivered with an undercurrent of disdain, even as she loves all the glitz. This dichotomy propels much of The Fame, particularly on the clever "Paparazzi," where she casts herself as the photographic parasite chasing after her crush, but none of this meta text would work if the songs didn't click, functioning simultaneously as glorious pop trash and a wicked parody of it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Released: 11/04/2008

RSD Date: n/a

Genre: Electronic

Best Sellers: Top Seller

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Lady-Gaga-The-Fame-Vinyl_1MGIX.jpg?v=1741974388
david-bowie-beauty-beast-vinyl
David Bowie BEAUTY & BEAST Vinyl

Brand New Sealed | David Bowie | Beauty & Beast | Vinyl | Release Date: 01/05/2018

RSD Date: n/a

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

Released: 01/05/2018

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-David-Bowie-Beauty-Beast-Vinyl_PLBLf.jpg?v=1741191305
stephen-malkmus-groove-denied-vinyl
Stephen Malkmus Groove Denied Vinyl

Brand New Sealed | Stephen Malkmus | Groove Denied | Vinyl | Release Date: 03/15/2019

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP Clear standard Jacket

Genre: Electronic

Internal ID: JITRE

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 3/15/2019

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Stephen-Malkmus-Groove-Denied-Vinyl_3UbIZ.jpg?v=1742056794
frank-zappa-freak-out-2lp-vinyl
Frank Zappa FREAK OUT! The album does, however, mark a change in approach. Bursting with creatively wacky pop tunes using a vibrant, at times '50s sci-fi-evoking electronics palette, Animal Collective could have more accurately called this their Devo album instead of "our Ramones record" as Geologist did in a pre-release Rolling Stone interview. The point is taken, though: forms are tightened, artificial reverb shed, experimental excursions not eliminated but greatly limited, and a premium is placed on lively beats and pleasing harmonies. Fans shouldn't worry that they've produced a collection of aerodynamic jingles, however; the songs still sound artful and uniquely Animal Collective. For instance, rhythmically complex tandem vocals skip and trip through the album, as on the exacting "Lying in the Grass" and "Hocus Pocus" (which also features John Cale on viola). Lyrics are repeated syllable by syllable until the two singers join for moments of harmony, keeping the melodies bouncing like a Max Fleischer cartoon. "Summing the Wretch" is a polyrhythmic ditty that uses these shadow vocals and a brisk tempo to challenge any attempted singalongs (imagine a stimulant-addled "Carol of the Bells"). Elsewhere, "On Delay" is the glitchiest song on the record but governed by fat, driving drum tones and a loose structure that glides along intermittent, railroad switch-like chord progressions, though at roller coaster pace. If that doesn't sound fun enough, samples of the Surfaris' "Wipeout" ("FloriDada") and dialogue from TV's The Golden Girls ("Golden Gal") also grace the album. Painting With was recorded in Studio 3 of EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California, the same space where many legendary albums including the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds were recorded. Undeniably great sounding, the record puts Animal Collective's brightest colors forward and, if history is any indication, is no predictor whatsoever of what they may do next. ~ Marcy Donelson

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP + MP3 DL Card

Genre: Electronic

Released: 02/19/2016

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

Internal ID: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Animal-Collective-Painting-With-Vinyl_TkL9M.jpg?v=1742114351
aphex-twin-collapse-ep-vinyl
Aphex Twin Collapse Ep Vinyl
In some ways, Collapse sounds like the most Aphexian recording Aphex Twin has released since bursting back onto the scene with 2014's Syro. Since then, he's ventured down several different rabbit holes via EPs and limited releases, from the clinical experiments of Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments, Pt. 2 to the manic acid techno of Orphaned Deejay Selek: 2006-2008, not to mention the smorgasbord of glitches, rushes, and interstellar howls spread across a 90-minute cassette only available at the Fuji Rock Festival in 2017. As interesting as his post-comeback work has been, much of it has seemed like demos or works in progress, and it's often lacked the distinct personality which made Aphex's work stand out during the '90s. Collapse, however, is instantly, unmistakably recognizable as an Aphex release. Here, he returns to the ultra-glitchy beats and childlike melodies of releases like Hangable Auto Bulb and Richard D. James Album, while sounding miles away from them. "T69 collapse" begins the proceedings with rapidly fluttering beats over softly rippling notes and a slightly crooked bassline. After two minutes, it suddenly switches into a much darker mode, with the distorted kick drums heading towards gabber territory. The elastic percussion rolls and stutters, recalling the fluid beat structures of Second Woman, before reaching sonic overload. Yet after all of that, it doesn't end up sinking the rhythm or melody, which continue on their merry way. "1st 44" features shredded, scratched-up samples of old-school jungle over scrambled electro beats, referencing the past without sounding like a retro throwback. "MT1 t29r2" includes harp-like tones which recall Aphex's classic 1993 single "On," but this track is more fractured and hyperkinetic than angelic. Concluding track "pthex" (inexplicably left off the EP's vinyl issue) is another exhilarating blend of atmospheric pads and adrenalin-rush beats and glitches which threaten to overpower everything, but the track maintains it composure. Somewhat ironically titled, Collapse ends up being one of Aphex's stronger post-2000 releases. ~ Paul Simpson

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

RSD Date: n/a

Genre: Electronic

Released: 09/14/2018

Format Detail: 12" Vinyl in paper inner in printed outer sleeve. Kindred expresses a version of hesitant romance where disaster lurks but may not be inevitable, and where the moment is everything; "Let's go 'til we can't." A cartload of sugar helps the anxiety go down in the most irresistible Passion Pit way, or something like that. ~ Marcy Donelson

RSD Date: n/a

Released: 04/21/2015

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Passion-Pit-Kindred-Vinyl_BmpW5.jpg?v=1742123213
flying-lotus-pattern-grid-world-vinyl
Flying Lotus PATTERN & GRID WORLD Vinyl

Flying Lotus | Pattern & Grid World | Vinyl | 09/21/2010

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: 12" w/ special poster

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/21/2010

RSD Release Date: n/a

Internal ID: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Flying-Lotus-Pattern-Grid-World-Vinyl_6xoAC.jpg?v=1742056862
nine-inch-nails-pretty-hate-machine-vinyl
Nine Inch Nails PRETTY HATE MACH(LP) Vinyl
Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor (vocals, various instruments).
Additional personnel includes: Richard Patrick (guitar); Chris Vrenna (drums).
Although Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor became the poster boy for industrial rock in the early 1990s, his '89 debut, PRETTY HATE MACHINE, actually has a stronger foothold in '80s synth-pop. Over the course of three albums, Lana Del Rey hasn't so much expanded her delicately sculpted persona as she has refined it, removing anything extraneous to her exquisite ennui. Honeymoon doesn't drift or float, it marks time, sometimes swelling with a suggestion of impending melodrama but often deflating to just an innervated pulse. Apart from the syncopated chorus on "High on the Beach," any lingering element of the hip-hop affectations of Born to Die have been banished and so have the shade and light Dan Auerbach brought to Ultraviolence, a record that feels cinematic in comparison to Honeymoon. What's left behind is the essence of Lana Del Rey: iconic images of days of Los Angeles passed, all plasticized and stylized, functioning as lighthouses in stoned, sad daydreams. Mood reigns over all on Honeymoon -- melodies and tempos certainly aren't prioritized over feel; all the originals are purposefully languid, which is partially why the Nancy Sinatra sample on "Terrence Loves You" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," a cover allegedly in the vein of Nina Simone's original but bearing an organ out of the Animals, stick -- but underneath the dragging beats and austere arrangements, there's something approaching triumph. Originally released on Epic (40600).
Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
The downside to a success like Thriller is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached Bad much the same way he approached Thriller -- take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper into hard rock, deeper into schmaltzy adult contemporary, deeper into hard dance -- essentially taking each portion of Thriller to an extreme, while increasing the quotient of immaculate studiocraft. He wound up with a sleeker, slicker Thriller, which isn't a bad thing, but it's not a rousing success, either. For one thing, the material just isn't as good. Look at the singles: only three can stand alongside album tracks from its predecessor ("Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "I Just Can't Stop Loving You"), another is simply OK ("Smooth Criminal"), with the other two showcasing Jackson at his worst (the saccharine "Man in the Mirror," the misogynistic "Dirty Diana"). Then, there are the album tracks themselves, something that virtually didn't exist on Thriller but bog down Bad not just because they're bad, but because they reveal that Jackson's state of the art is not hip. And they constitute a near-fatal dead spot on the record -- songs three through six, from "Speed Demon" to "Another Part of Me," a sequence that's utterly faceless, lacking memorable hooks and melodies, even when Stevie Wonder steps in for "Just Good Friends," relying on nothing but studiocraft. Part of the joy of Off the Wall and Thriller was that craft was enhanced with tremendous songs, performances, and fresh, vivacious beats. For this dreadful stretch, everything is mechanical, and while the album rebounds with songs that prove mechanical can be tolerable if delivered with hooks and panache, it still makes Bad feel like an artifact of its time instead a piece of music that transcends it. And if that wasn't evident proof that Jackson was losing touch, consider this -- the best song on the album is "Leave Me Alone" (why are all of his best songs paranoid anthems?), a tune tacked on to the end of the CD and never released as a single, apart from a weirdly claustrophobic video that, not coincidentally, was the best video from the album. Like In Rainbows before it, the actuality of The King of Limbs is purposefully somewhat obscured by the hullabaloo surrounding the album's surprise release -- announced for a Saturday release on a Monday, shifted to a Friday -- and in the case of KOL, such clamor is needed. Wispy and ephemeral, shimmering skin draped over the barest of bones, The King of Limbs doesn't deliberately lack a solid foundation, songwriting traded for sound construction. Masters of mood that they are, Radiohead digitally weave stuttering, glitchy loops of drums and guitars with real instruments, Thom Yorke's mournful moan and keening falsetto acting as a binding agent, creating an alluringly dour atmosphere. Despite a pair of intellectually funky moments -- "Morning Mr. Magpie" and "Little by Little," grouped together at the beginning, giving the album a slight hint of momentum that quickly fades -- this is rather monochromatic and not too far removed from the territory Radiohead began etching out with Kid A. Where that icy 2000 effort had the bracing chill of the new, The King of Limbs is familiar -- not commonplace, but carrying a certain inevitability as its eight songs slowly unspool. There are no surprises in the floating textures, no delight in the details, no astonishment in how the band navigates intricate turns: this is the sound of Radiohead doing what they do, doing it very well, doing it without flash or pretension, gently easing from the role of pioneers to craftsmen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

RSD Date: n/a

Format Detail: LP standard Jacket

Genre: Electronic

Released: 05/20/2016

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

Internal ID: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Radiohead-King-Of-Limbs-Vinyl_iJgFH.jpg?v=1742056438
flying-lotus-cosmogramma-vinyl
Flying Lotus COSMOGRAMMA Vinyl
For 26-year-old Steve Ellison's deservedly hyped third album, Flying Lotus loosened the reins and set out to make Cosmogramma, which his label, Warp, promoted as a space opera of sorts. More of a long-playing, cohesive listen than the prior year's excellent Los Angeles, which felt like a collection of insular, Dilla-inspired beats, Flying Lotus evolved into a forerunner of his own personal genre. On this, his most far-out release to date, he incorporates a thicker amount of live instrumentation (horns, strings, bass, guitar, and even harp) with his laptop manipulations, and branches away from hip-hop. Call it futuristic fusion, if you will, but the result is much more ahead of the curve than, say, Herbie Hancock's Future 2 Future (though it shares some similarities) and more on par with a Jaga Jazzist or a Four Tet release. That is, it's left of center. Free jazz plays a huge part, and Flylo draws deeply from his Coltrane lineage, but he also dips into past-prime electronic and dance styles. Techno, house, and drum'n'bass all take shape alongside IDM blips, dubstep, and disco strings or blaxploitation soundtrack orchestration, courtesy of OutKast and Erykah Badu arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. As a mass of shape-shifting layers, the album mutates constantly throughout the tracks, in a dense soundscape that sometimes feels palpable and at other times becomes liquid, rife with bottomless possibilities. His addition to Nine Inch Nails does give Not the Actual Events a hint of cinematic sweep, but Reznor always excelled at painting with electronics, a strength that does not fail him here. Largely aggressive and noisy, the EP benefits from tight arrangements; squalls of fury might arrive out of nowhere but they're precisely timed. So is the sequencing of the EP, as it opens with the brisk blast of "Branches/Bones," moves to the muddy, cloistered "Dear World," builds to the six-minute centerpiece "She's Gone Away," which then gets blasted off the map by "The Idea of You" -- an ominous rocker anchored by Dave Grohl -- and then settles into the brooding closer, "Burning Bright (Field on Fire)." If Not the Actual Events seems somewhat less than the sum of its parts -- maybe it's the brevity, maybe it's how the arrangements are more memorable than the melodies -- it's nevertheless worthy, not so much as a cacophonous palette cleanser after 2013's Hesitation Marks but as an effective demonstration of craft. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

RSD Date: n/a

Released: 11/17/2017

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Nine-Inch-Nails-Not-The-Actual-Events-Vinyl_UCf7u.jpg?v=1741189249
sam-smith-in-the-lonely-hour-vinyl
Sam Smith IN THE LONELY HOUR Vinyl
Disclosure's loping dance-pop single "Latch," a number 11 U.K. hit in 2012, introduced Sam Smith, a London-born vocalist with a deeply emotive voice. Smith grew up listening to R&B giants Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and Whitney Houston, but his first impression was unique, not merely for the richness of his voice, but its resoundingly expressive yet naturally delivered manner -- on a level most singers can't match with maximum effort. Early 2013 brought his debut solo single, "Lay Me Down" -- an aching singer/songwriter-soul throwback that scraped the U.K. Top 50. It was quickly eclipsed by a lead role on Naughty Boy's "La La La," a breakbeat-driven tearjerker that went to number one in the U.K. and then reached the Top 20 in the U.S. "Money on My Mind," an upbeat statement of purpose more about the soul than the heart, and "Stay with Me," a torch song with a gospel-inspired chorus, were Smith's second and third solo singles. They preceded the release of In the Lonely Hour, the singer and songwriter's debut album. Those three solo singles are here, along with seven new songs that tend to cast Smith as a heartbroken balladeer. Deep sorrow informs most of the material. Much more about mourning than movement here, Smith is bold for not attempting to capitalize on the Disclosure and Naughty Boy hits. The dominance of stripped-down backdrops -- some with merely piano, acoustic guitar, and conservative strings -- is somewhat surprising. That puts all the more focus on Smith's voice and words, the latter of which switch between borderline maudlin ("What use is money when you need someone to hold?") and disarmingly brazen ("Just leave your lover, leave him for me"). If Smith didn't have such a remarkable voice, he could stay busy composing songs for artists in several genres; the anthemic "Like I Can" could be easily adapted for a contemporary country singer, while a few others could be turned over to young pop artists in need of material that makes them sound more human. This is an understated and promising first step from an unpredictable and distinctive talent. ~ Andy Kellman

Released: 6/17/2014

Genre: Electronic

Format: Vinyl

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Sam-Smith-In-The-Lonely-Hour-Vinyl_W9rhm.jpg?v=1742067652
nine-inch-nails-the-fragile-vinyl
Nine Inch Nails The Fragile Vinyl
Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor (vocals, various instruments, programming).
Additional personnel: Keith Hillebrandt, Charlie Clouser, Paul Decarli, Steve Duda, Clinton Bradley (programming).
Engineers include: Alan Moulder, Brian Pollack, Steve Albini.
Recorded at Nothing Studios, New Orleans. Upon closer inspection, there are new frills, yet these aren't apparent without digging. The Fragile lives up to its title once the first disc is over. There are some detours into noisy bluster (some, like the Marilyn Manson dis "Starfuckers, Inc.," work quite well) but they're surrounded by long, evocative instrumental sections that highlight Reznor's gifts for arrangement. Whenever Reznor crafts delicate, alternately haunting and pretty soundscapes or interesting sonic juxtapositions, The Fragile is compelling. Since they provide a change of pace, the bursts of industrial noise assist the flow of the album, which never feels indulgent, even though it runs over 100 minutes. Ballard's collection of the same title. "Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown," one of the chapters in the Ballard book, would have been just as apt an inscription on an album that looks more like a mid-'80s 12" designed by Neville Brody than anything classified as hip-hop. Old comrade Paul White produces two-thirds of the tracks, lending gnarled, sometimes clanging and blasting rhythms that complement Brown's elevated levels of dread and anxiety and slightly reduced amount of vulgar mischief. Brown spends most of his time looking darkly inward. In that berserk yet lucid high pitch, he raps about being more desperate to score than his clients: "Slice your tomato if you owe us for the lettuce/Runnin' through the D sorta like Jerome Bettis." He depicts himself as a vice-addled, teeth-grinding paranoiac with no soul or hope, and that summarizes only the first three cuts. The outward-looking material is just as biting. In "Today," the track that most exemplifies the album's title, Brown pithily specifies observed struggles and atrocities -- hustling to pay for diapers, the dodging of bullets from murderous civilians and authority, the prison-industrial complex -- as he references OutKast. No such dread is in "Dance in the Water," the album's only true break from the hellscapes. Over the brawling tribal Pulsallama rhythm that it takes to dance to what he has to live through, Brown paraphrases Parliament's "Aqua Boogie" as he outlines a new workout plan -- minus a proposition, one technically clean enough to be applied by youngsters. Guest appearances are kept to a judicious few. Kendrick Lamar provides a verse and the hook on "Really Doe," a knocking Black Milk production that also features Ab-Soul and Earl Sweatshirt. Brown's meeting with Cypress Hill's B-Real is expectedly pinched and faded. Most symbiotic is "From the Ground Up," decaying funk with Kelela in dreamlike Janet Jackson mode. Drifting outside the comfort zone of what a Nine Inch Nails album is expected to sound like, Bad Witch is the least accessible of the trilogy, a pessimistic, misanthropic, and frustrating cacophony that challenges even the most devoted NIN fan. And yet, after multiple listens, Bad Witch reveals itself as the most cohesive and enveloping experience of this period. As Reznor noted in interviews, Events focused on self-reflection and self-destruction, while Violence searched for answers from a broken world. Bad Witch concludes that we're the problem and humanity is doomed. That nihilistic blood courses through these six songs, which can be divided into pairs: a triptych within the trilogy.
Reznor launches an immediate assault with "Shit Mirror," a corrosive reflection of the worst of us all. Shards of Broken cut through the distortion and handclaps and saxophones herald a "new world, new times" as Reznor accepts that "mutation feels alright." Bleeding directly into "Ahead of Ourselves," the torrent continues, with Reznor's ring-modulated vocals buried beneath a heavily programmed drum'n'bass beat and jagged riffs. Maniacally hopeless, humanity is condemned as a pack of "knuckle dragging animal(s)" who celebrate ignorance. Reznor hasn't been this outwardly pissed off in years and it's a thrill.
The heart of Bad Witch owes much to David Bowie and his final album, Blackstar. Instrumental jazz break "Play the Goddamned Part" -- which recalls Lost Highway's "Driver Down" expanded with more sax squeals and piano tinkering -- serves as a five-minute introduction to the Lynch-ian noir of lead single "God Break Down the Door," an oddity in the NIN catalog that debuts Reznor's hitherto unheard, Bowie-esque croon. Bad Witch closes with a pair of experimental squalls that devour nearly half of the album's run time. "I'm Not from This World" builds with ominous dread, an unnerving mutation of Reznor's work on the Quake soundtrack. "Over and Out" ends Bad Witch and the trilogy itself with more sax, full-throated singing, Year Zero beats, and ghostly Fragile-era xylophone. Both warning and resignation, Reznor cautions "time is running out" as the song evaporates into the ether, ending this 18-month journey on an uncomfortable note. As the band looks back upon three decades of pain and rage, Reznor and Ross leave the sonic bread crumbs and callback allusions to the first two installments, advancing with fresh and surprising new possibilities for the coming era of Nine Inch Nails. ~ Neil Z.
