Surely no holy grail like the similarly mentioned Cold Fact by Sussex labelmate Sixto Rodriguez, it seems at least unfairly ignored. Nothing here might be as compelling as \"Grandma's Hands\" or \"I Can't Write Left-Handed,\" but there are plenty of melancholy reflections from a genuine soulman who came across more as a West coast singer\/songwriter. Replacing the hired hands of his debut with former employees of Charles Wright \u0026amp; the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band proved equally important in shaping Withers' identity. Not only had they been instrumental in creating a landmark with his second album Still Bill, follow-up Live at Carnegie Hall showed how easily they could replicate their unrestrained approach on-stage, performing quite a few tunes which hadn't yet appeared on a studio album. This experience further tightening a natural combination, the band was set for Withers' third studio album. The moody overtones of 'Justments suggest both band and singer might have suffered a bit from fatigue, a notion not altogether far-fetched since they would dissolve upon completing it. Not even Spanish minstrel Jos? Feliciano could rescue a song like \"Railroad Man\" from getting stuck in a not unpleasant but ultimately unrewarding jam mode. Still, a few gems are worth mentioning. The spine-tingling string sections for \"You\" and \"Ruby Lee\" for instance invoke the memory of Still Bill's intriguing \"Who Is He and What Is He to You.\" The former would be released as a single and crack the Top 15 R\u0026amp;B chart, as would \"Heartbreak Road\" and \"The Same Love That Made Me Laugh.\" The demise of Sussex led to both the labels' catalog and Withers himself being transferred to Columbia. Though some of its feel would always shine through his releases for his new employer, 'Justments stands out for being the last album where the artist's unique character takes the foreground rather than being mostly left to drown in a glossy production. Thus, while its \"lost album\" status is mostly due to it being out of print for ages, in a just world it would be re-released back to back with 1975's Making Music. There's not a whole lot of enthusiasm for revelry, dulled by substances, apathy, a combination of the two, or just the aspiration to look the part: \"I'm so faded off of all the things I've taken, and maybe I'm not really drunk, maybe I'm really good at faking.\" There are points at which Robinson makes Frank Ocean sound like Teddy Pendergrass. On \"Young Dumb \u0026amp; Broke,\" the mere concept of commitment seems so silly to him that he can't be bothered to enunciate the word, or maybe he just lost interest after the second syllable. After a nonchalant chorus that consists primarily of the song's title and a lethargic warble -- surprise -- he dumps one of his best melodies in the bridge. While he opens \"Another Sad Love Song\" by confessing \"I'm not the best at showing my emotions,\" some bright moments make it apparent that Robinson has clearly sold himself short. Dusty ballad \"Cold Blooded,\" in particular, demonstrates that he's perfectly capable of conveying grief without being overly demonstrative. The downcast \"Bad Luck\" lashes out at parasitic behavior, and in a number of other songs, Khalid seeks escape from stifling situations, consumed by internal conflict, this close to swearing off all communication via WiFi for at least five minutes. These feelings aren't unique to pop stars, and even though they make up a fair portion of Free Spirit, Khalid and his fellow songwriters never express them in such specific language that an everyday listener can't relate to. More than anything else, the album works through emotional struggles of early adulthood -- from anguish over faltering relationships and insecurity about expressing grief, to yearning for a simple stolen moment beneath the bleachers. Consequently, Free Spirit is not an illustrative title. In the song itself, the notion is merely aspirational and wistful, with Khalid vividly recalling, \"We were drownin' down our memories\/A cemetery full of broken bottles, man, that liquor bleed.\" Khalid's voice is smoother, richer, and therefore more expressive here than it was on the debut. The raw soul passion in \"Trying So Hard Not to Know\" evokes the historic Stax ethos perfectly, while sidling up to the Band's Big Pink era. \"S.O.B.\" has verses saturated in Southern gospel, with foot stomping and handclaps as the only accompaniment, before the entire band erupts in a carousing chorus. This reverses gospel's usual Saturday-night-to-Sunday-morning course; it is one of the rowdiest broken-heart songs you'll ever hear. \"I'd Be Waiting\" is a tender, wide-open love song with a late-night jazzy soul feel. The singer's voice is haunted equally by the spirits of Cooke and Bobby \"Blue\" Bland. If this album has a weakness -- and it does -- it's that Rateliff's use of these forms and styles in his writing is not only basic -- which is fine -- but overly formulaic. Only the pedal steel-driven Americana in the absolutely lovely \"Wasting Time\" -- which recalls the Gregg Allman of Laid Back -- deviates; one or two more songs in this vein (especially with this band) would have made all the difference.
