Surely no holy grail like the similarly mentioned Cold Fact by Sussex labelmate Sixto Rodriguez, it seems at least unfairly ignored. Nothing here might be as compelling as "Grandma's Hands" or "I Can't Write Left-Handed," but there are plenty of melancholy reflections from a genuine soulman who came across more as a West coast singer/songwriter. Replacing the hired hands of his debut with former employees of Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band proved equally important in shaping Withers' identity. Not only had they been instrumental in creating a landmark with his second album Still Bill, follow-up Live at Carnegie Hall showed how easily they could replicate their unrestrained approach on-stage, performing quite a few tunes which hadn't yet appeared on a studio album. This experience further tightening a natural combination, the band was set for Withers' third studio album. The moody overtones of 'Justments suggest both band and singer might have suffered a bit from fatigue, a notion not altogether far-fetched since they would dissolve upon completing it. Not even Spanish minstrel Jos? Feliciano could rescue a song like "Railroad Man" from getting stuck in a not unpleasant but ultimately unrewarding jam mode. Still, a few gems are worth mentioning. The spine-tingling string sections for "You" and "Ruby Lee" for instance invoke the memory of Still Bill's intriguing "Who Is He and What Is He to You." The former would be released as a single and crack the Top 15 R&B chart, as would "Heartbreak Road" and "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh." The demise of Sussex led to both the labels' catalog and Withers himself being transferred to Columbia. Though some of its feel would always shine through his releases for his new employer, 'Justments stands out for being the last album where the artist's unique character takes the foreground rather than being mostly left to drown in a glossy production. Thus, while its "lost album" status is mostly due to it being out of print for ages, in a just world it would be re-released back to back with 1975's Making Music. This just might turn out historically interesting, as it would document Withers' evolution towards the guilty pleasure of "Lovely Day." ~ Quint Kik

RSD Release Date: DDD

Genre: Funk / Soul

Format: Vinyl

Released: 02/11/14

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Bill-Withers-Justments-Vinyl_Qknb7.jpg?v=1742069207
status-quo-collected-vinyl
Status Quo Collected Vinyl

Brand New Sealed | Status Quo | Collected | Vinyl | Release Date: 03/16/2018

Genre: Rock

RSD Release Date: DDD

Released: 03/16/18

Format: Vinyl

RSD Date: DDD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Status-Quo-Collected-Vinyl_0kD5d.jpg?v=1741189135
the-beatles-past-masters-1-2-09-vinyl
The Beatles PAST MASTERS 1&2 '09 Vinyl
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion, sound effects); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, bass, drums, maracas, sound effects); George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums).
Additional personnel includes: Brian Jones (saxophone); Nicky Hopkins (piano); Billy Preston (organ); Mal Evans (sound effects).
Compilation producer: Mark Lewisohn.
Recorded between September 4, 1962 and January 4, 1970.
Tracks 1-5, 8-9 and 33 are mono. VOLUME ONE is Parlophone 90043, VOLUME TWO is Parlophone 90044. See individual albums for further details.
When Capitol decided to release the original British editions of the Beatles' albums instead of the bastardized American versions, they were left with a bit of a quandary. Since the Beatles had an enormous number of non-LP singles, some of their greatest hits -- from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" through "Hey Jude" -- would not be included on disc if Capitol simply served up straight reissues. They had two options: they could add the singles as bonus tracks to the appropriate CDs, or they could release a compilation of all the non-LP tracks. It should come as no surprise that they chose the latter. Over its first half, Past Masters captures the exuberance of Beatlemania while confirming the band's talents as popcraftsmen ("This Boy," "Yes It Is") and proving that they could rock really, really hard ("I Feel Fine," "She's a Woman," the peerless "I'm Down"). From 1965 on, the 15 non-LP tracks released in the last five years of the band's career (not counting the singles that were released on Magical Mystery Tour) may not be as thematically consistent, but they hit greater highs with a greater frequency. Indeed, some of the greatest singles in pop history are here: "Day Tripper," "We Can Work It Out," "Paperback Writer," "Rain," "Lady Madonna," "Hey Jude," "Revolution," "Don't Let Me Down," and "The Ballad of John and Yoko." In the middle of all this, single versions of "Get Back" and "Let It Be" appear (the former is stiffer than the LP version, the latter is better than its counterpart), along with the alternate (and superior) "Across the Universe" and the silly yet strangely irresistible "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)." Apart from a few cuts that are merely rarities, this is a near-perfect compilation that captures the energy and spirit of the Beatles' entire career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

RSD Date: DDD

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-The-Beatles-Past-Masters-1-2-09-Vinyl_NSwXV.jpg?v=1741887178
melvins-stag-vinyl
Melvins Stag Vinyl
Melvins: King Buzzo, Mark D, Dale (vocals, various instruments).
Additional personnel: Bill Bartell (guitar); Dirty Walt (valve trombone); Mac Mann (piano, organ); Mackie (drums); Gggarth (background vocals).
Producers: Melvins, Gggarth, Joe Baressi, King Buzzo, Mark D.
Engineers: Melvins, Gggarth, Joe Baressi.
The repeating sitar-into-guitar-chord start of the album makes it clear that Stag isn't going to be quite like anything the Melvins had yet recorded to that point. There's such a strong and audible emphasis on the band really exploring the possibilities of the studio throughout that the effect is breathtaking -- it's a huge, epic sound that's also quite varied, a fine indication of where the band would be going in later years. The roots of the Melvins remain clear -- direct, deliberate, and focused crunch -- but they don't feel constrained by them, bringing in everything from more stripped-down space in the arrangements to stylistic forays revolving around the central approach. Hearing horns and scratching helping match the monster riffs on "Bar X the Rocking M" is at once a mind-f*ck and something that makes total sense, as does the mini-prog epic "Buck Owens," packing in time-signature shifts and a mid-section trip-out and more in three minutes' time. Short, almost fragmentary songs like "Hide," with its quiet guitar chime, and the weird, sparkly drones and burbles of "Soup" help to further flesh out the inspired feeling of Stag. Osborne's vocal delivery and various treatments thereupon are fantastic, ranging from dreamy float and gentle croon to rasping roar, paralleling Stag's overall emphasis on trying anything at least once to see what works. Check his winsome, light turn on "Black Bock" for a real trip -- it's hard to believe this is the same guy who sang on "Hooch" and "It's Shoved." Songs like "Tipping the Lion" and "Goggles" capture the spirit of Stag excellently, able to switch from quieter to louder moments and back again effortlessly. Raekwon's chamber briefly escapes the Clan's musical borders on "Verbal Intercourse," and though the track evokes other Wu-Tang material, Nas' lyrical presence adds a different dimension to the album's haunting reality.
As usual, The RZA dominates the production on each razor-sharp cut, and with appearences from just about every Clan MC, ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX... could easily be a Raekwon-sponsored Wu-Tang reunion.

Genre: Hip Hop

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

RSD Date: DDD

Released: 2/15/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Raekwon-Only-Built-4-Cuban-Linx-Vinyl_DgstZ.jpg?v=1742066415
miles-davis-big-fun-vinyl
Miles Davis Big Fun Vinyl
Personnel includes: Miles Davis (trumpet); Sonny Fortune (soprano saxophone, flute); Steve Grossman, Wayne Shorter, Carlos Garnett (soprano saxophone); Bennie Maupin (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet); Lonnie Smith, Harold I. Includes liner notes by Bennie Maupin.
In the period following Miles Davis' crossover breakthrough, BITCHES BREW, the trumpeter recorded incessantly, trying out new combinations of ideas and musicians. These progressive young musicians went on to forge a new alloy of music from the ore of funk, electric soul, psychedelic blues and progressive rock, with trace elements of classical and jazz. And Miles was the lightning rod for it all.
BIG FUN gathers up some of the trumpeter's choicest experiments in '70s cool, much of it with a profoundly Indian flavor, and Miles' attraction to raga phrasing mirrors his love of flamenco melodies, particularly on "Lonely Fire" (a late Miles ballad in the tradition of "Nefertiti," "Shhh/Peaceful" and "Sanctuary"). This moody arrangement is distinguished by floating tear drops of tamboura, sitar, tabla and Fender/Rhodes, as Miles sounds taps, shadowed by soprano sax and bass clarinet, before breaking into tempo over the crossrhythms of Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.
Miles employs twin keyboardists, twin bassists and twin drummers, throughout BIG FUN, and the visceral starts and stops of "Great Expectations" highlight the sort of layered, collective polyphony he was trying to develop, his focused melodies acting as a lyric beacon. "Ife" is Miles in his ON THE CORNER mode, marked by the arrival of funk bassist Michael Henderson, percussionist Mtume and long-time collaborator Al Foster (plus Billy Hart) on drums. But the real highlight is "Go Ahead John," where Davis and his favorite guitarist surf over the fulminating groove of Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland in fast funk and slow blues sections.

Genre: Jazz

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 9/5/2016

RSD Date: DDD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Miles-Davis-Big-Fun-Vinyl_jl6g8.jpg?v=1742067496
muddy-waters-hard-again-vinyl
Muddy Waters Hard Again Vinyl
Also available in a 3-pack with I'M READY and KING BEE.
Personnel: Muddy Waters (vocals, guitar); Johnny Winter (guitar, background vocals); Bob Margolin (guitar); James Cotton (harmonica); Pine Top Perkins (piano); Charles Calmese (bass); Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (drums).
Muddy spent much of the late '60s and early '70s engaging in crossover attempts, achieving varying degrees of critical and commercial success. But no matter what far-flung paths his studio efforts took, his live performances remained unadulterated. It took the savvy of blues-rocker Johnny Winter to put Muddy's from-the-heart style back where it belonged: in the studio.
Produced by Winter, the appropriately titled HARD AGAIN finds Muddy and his regular band pounding into the old material with all the fury of their '50s heyday. For his part as guitarist, Winter successfully straddles the line between reverence and enthusiasm, laying back enough to let the master strut his stuff, but nevertheless goading Muddy on with highly audible verbal exhortations. This is as close as a studio album gets to a "live" feel. Hearing Muddy burn through a chestnut like "Mannish Boy" with the vim and vigor of a man decades younger, one begins to understand the nature of his artistic consistency and preternatural staying power. Not only does the album's theme evolve around the mystique of the pyramid, but it also touches on man's fascination with superstition and its powers. The instrumental "Voyager" opens things up, and its provocative style sets the tone for the album's supernatural mood. The bright-sounding "What Goes Up" is one of the highlights here, as is "The Eagle Will Rise Again," sung by Colin Blunstone. The move from his acoustic folk debut INSIDE WANTS OUT to the electric pop of his breakthroughs, ROOM FOR SQUARES and HEAVIER THINGS, showed him to be a singer, guitarist, and songwriter of range as well as commercial durability. Mayer then confounded the critics who dismissed him as a Dave Matthews clone when he released a raw, rootsy, blues-based live album with a trio that featured ace session musicians.
The horizons of Mayer's musical world continued to expand with 2006's CONTINUUM. Mellow and soulful, yet textured and sophisticated in execution, CONTINUUM incorporates all the elements of the artist's previous releases while raising the bar on craft, musicianship, and tunesmithery. Classic blues, R&B, and soul are the major touchstones here, but Mayer doesn't merely ape his influences; instead he assimilates them into a personal singer-songwriter mode that is as affecting as it is understated. Mid-tempo and downtempo grooves dominate, but the man still has a way with a lilting, folk-tinged melody (as on the lovely "The Heart of Life"). While whooping it up at a wild, happening party, she enjoys all the fun but is really just looking for "One Good Man." Not many of the numerous Janis imitators in the US gained much notoriety, but it's certain that over in England, one Robert Plant was paying close attention.

Released: 08/28/12

Genre: Rock

RSD Release Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Janis-Joplin-I-Got-Dem-Ol-Kozmic-Blues-Again-Mama-Vinyl_PmXOF.jpg?v=1742095978
johnny-cash-16-biggest-hits-vinyl
Johnny Cash 16 Biggest Hits Vinyl
Also available in a 3-pack with WILLIE NELSON: 16 BIGGEST HITS and GEORGE JONES: 16 BIGGEST HITS.
Producers include: Bob Johnston, Don Law, Frank Jones, Johnny Cash, Charlie Bragg.

RSD Date: n/a

Released: 02/22/10

Format: Vinyl

Genre: Folk, World, & Country

RSD Release Date: n/a

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Johnny-Cash-16-Biggest-Hits-Vinyl_yUzc2.jpg?v=1741188962
tony-bennett-duets-2-vinyl
Tony Bennett Duets 2 Vinyl
Few modern singers understand the phrasing of singing the way Tony Bennett does. When Twin Peaks took off, however, the album became more or less its unofficial soundtrack thanks to the instrumental adaptation of "Falling" that served as the theme song. Other cuts, like the haunting, moody "Into the Night," and "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart" turned up on the show as well; but as a beautiful, mysterious stand-alone effort, Floating is still that best of surprises, a left-field hit that loses nothing thanks to its fame. The combination of Cruise's sweet, light tones, Lynch's surprisingly affecting lyrics, which play just enough with clich?s so as not to seem willfully ironic, and Angelo Badalamenti's combination of retro styles and modern ambience, is a winner throughout. The feeling is one of a '50s jukebox suddenly plunged into a time warp, dressed with extra sparkle and with a just-sleepy-enough, narcotic feeling. At its most upfront, the music can get downright raunchy -- check out the big band/sax blasts on the strutting tearjerker "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart," or the sudden orchestral blast three minutes into "Into the Night." Cruise herself has a wonderfully slow, burning passion that surfaces as well, such as in her whispers on "Floating." But mostly everything is just sedate enough, crystalline rockabilly guitar playing gentle riffs with a slow slinkiness, Cruise's multi-tracked backing vocals and more combining beautifully. "Falling" remains the most well-known number, and a winner it is, too; Badalamenti's synth orchestrations are so affecting that Moby ended up sampling them for "Go," kickstarting his own career. But songs like the just-spooky-enough "The World Spins," and "The Nightingale," with a great performance all around, ensure Floating's success as a through-and-through listen. ~ Ned Raggett

Genre: Electronic

RSD Release Date: DDD

Released: 2/9/2015

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0518/8439/2621/files/Monostereo-Julee-Cruise-Floating-Into-The-Night-Vinyl_kfYtU.jpg?v=1742081690
j-j-cale-collected-vinyl
J.J.
