Images of highways, cowboys, and movies dance through the songs, as do sly allusions to the Kinks. It's not just that there's an echo of \"All Day and All of the Night\" on \"The Man Upstairs,\" either: \"Poetry\" recalls the pastoral jangle of Village Green Preservation Society and \"The Great Highway\" stomps like a Low Budget outtake. This is the key to understanding Americana. While there are a few nods to classic American music -- \"A Place in Your Heart\" rambles like an old country \u0026amp; western tune -- Americana is Davies examining how America has changed him, so it fits that his own work is threaded into the album. Backed by the Jayhawks -- an Americana band raised on the British Invasion -- Davies manages to skillfully pull off such subtle shifts in tone. Collaborating with a working band enlivens him -- there's snap and muscle here that were missing on the otherwise fine Working Man's Caf? -- and for as good as the songs are, what's initially so absorbing about Americana is this limber musicality. This lush sound is old-fashioned but, despite her stated rebellion and taste for weed, much of Musgraves' sensibility is fairly traditional. She and her collaborators -- usually co-producers Shane McAnally and Luke Laird, but Brandy Clark, Josh Osborne, and Natalie Hemby also bear credits -- concentrate on sculpting songs, tunes so subtle they benefit from the pretty, shaded production. The heavy presence of Martin, who wound up producing all the vocals along with half the record, is something of a feint. Swift tailored 1989 after Tedder's patterns, constructing nearly every one of the album's 13 tracks as an imposing skyscraper that deliberately casts its shadow upon on its predecessor. Considering that this album begins with the fanfare of \"Welcome to New York,\" that progressive escalation in size is something to behold. 1989 emphasizes its reflective surfaces, the hyperactive rhythm tracks -- dance by definition but rarely danceable in practice (the effervescent \"How You Get the Girl\" is an exception) -- functioning as an aural accent to the surging synthesizers and vocals.
